Social Media Hooks: 20 Scroll-Stopping Video Hooks (With Examples)

You have about three seconds. That's the window between someone landing on your video and their thumb deciding whether to stay or scroll — and everything you filmed rides on the first line out of your mouth.

That first line is your hook: the opening line whose only job is to buy the next three seconds. It's the highest-leverage thing you can improve about your content — and great hooks aren't a talent, they're a small set of repeatable patterns. Below are 20 social media hooks that stop the scroll, grouped into five families, with plug-and-play examples for Reels, TikTok, and Shorts.

How long should a social media hook be?

A social media hook should be about 3 seconds long — roughly 7 to 10 spoken words. Shorter is fine; longer and you've lost the window. Front-load the most interesting word and say it like you mean it.

Delivery paceWords per secondWords in 3 seconds
Calm~2.26–7
Conversational~2.57–8
Punchy / energetic~2.7–3.08–10

One rule fixes most weak hooks: the 3-second limit applies to the spoken hook only — the scroll-stopper. Everything after it is the body. If your “hook” is 18 words and explains the whole video, you've merged the hook and the payoff. Split them.

The 5 hook families

Every great hook pulls one of five psychological triggers. Pick a family on purpose, then pick a type.

  1. Curiosity — opens a loop the brain wants closed.
  2. Pattern Interrupt — says the opposite of what's expected.
  3. Identification — makes the viewer feel “that's me.”
  4. Stakes & Timeliness — urgency, or relevance right now.
  5. Proof — leads with visible, credible evidence.

Curiosity hooks

1. The Question — ask the exact question they're stuck on. “Why do your videos die at 200 views?”

2. The Observation — point out something true nobody says out loud. “Ever notice every viral video opens the same way?”

3. The Sneak Peek — tease something hidden you're about to show. “Here's what I never post on my feed.”

4. The Secret / Whisper — frame it as insider info. “Nobody talks about this growth hack. Listen.”

5. The Cliffhanger — promise a payoff you haven't revealed. “I almost deleted this video. Glad I didn't.”

Pattern interrupt hooks

6. The Contrarian — say the opposite of common advice. “Stop posting every day. It's hurting your reach.”

7. The Myth-Buster — call a common belief wrong. “Everything you know about hooks is wrong.”

8. The Skeptic Flip — admit you doubted it, then flip. “I thought this trend was dumb. I was wrong.”

9. The Callout — name the mistake they're making. “You're filming your hooks completely wrong.”

10. The Absurd Alternative — exaggerate the hard way. “Memorize a 90-line script… or just read it.”

Identification hooks

11. The POV — drop them into a specific moment. “POV: it's take ten and you give up.”

12. The Confession — admit something relatable. “I used to cringe at every video I posted.”

13. Pain → Solution — name the pain, promise the fix. “Hate editing? This trick saves you hours.”

14. The Direct Callout — address exactly who it's for. “If you hate being on camera, watch this.”

Stakes & timeliness hooks

15. FOMO / Future Shock — they're falling behind. “It's 2026 and you're still editing manually?”

16. The Trend-jack — ride a trend, add your twist. “Everyone's using this trend wrong. Here's the fix.”

17. The Reminder / PSA — a timely nudge. “Reminder: your first line decides everything.”

Proof hooks

18. The Stat / Number — open with a striking number. “85% of people watch your videos on mute.”

19. The Testimonial — let a result speak. “This client tripled her views in one week.”

20. The Result-First — lead with the outcome. “I hit a million views with one change.”

How to write a hook that stops the scroll

The 20 types give you the shape. These five rules make any of them land:

  • Keep it to 7–10 words. If it doesn't fit in one breath, it's a body, not a hook.
  • Open a loop — don't summarize. A hook raises a question; the video answers it.
  • Talk like a human, not a brand. Short words, direct “you,” zero corporate throat-clearing.
  • Be specific. “Why your videos flop” is weak; “why your videos die at 200 views” stops the thumb.
  • Pay it off. The body must deliver what the hook promised.

3 mistakes that kill a good hook

  • Two hooks in one — hook, setup, and first benefit crammed into one breath. Cut to the single line that creates tension.
  • Burying it — a five-second logo intro pushes your hook to second six. Hook first, always.
  • Playing it safe — a hook that offends no one intrigues no one. Pick a real angle.
